Darüşşafaka Robotics Team in the FRC World Championship!

Darüşşafaka Robotics Team “Sultans of Turkey” enjoys the opportunity to participate in FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science & Technology) Robotics Competition in the USA for the past 7 years, and make us proud. This year, Darüşşafaka FRC Team competed at the Orlando Regional on March 11-14 2015 and got the best result since it started to participate in the competition. The Team won 8 out of 10 matches and for the first time earned a place in the World Championship. The Team also won the “Regional Engineering Inspiration Award” which is sponsored by NASA.

As a past country champion and a winner of Judges Award, Imagery Award, Team Spirit Award and EKOCYCLE™ Cube® 3D Printer Award since their first participation, the team had another wonderful learning experience as they competed with 64 teams from around the world.

The Team will compete at the World Championship which will take place in St. Louis on April 22-25, 2015. Darüşşafaka Team, as the only Turkish team among 156 teams which will participate in the World Championship, will represent Turkey with pride.

This year, 14 Darüşşafaka students and 3 teachers took part in the team. This year's task was “Recycle Rush” and it took 6 weeks for the team to complete their robot. This year the robot was produced with the sponsorship of Siemens and Siemens engineers gave support to the team throughout the process.

Fikret Yüksel Foundation which was established in the USA by late 1941 Darüşşafaka graduate Fikret Yüksel, helped founding the Darüşşafaka Robotics Team 7 years ago, and still continues its support today.

RECYCLE RUSH:
RECYCLE RUSH is a recycling-themed game played by two Alliances of three robots each. Robots score points by stacking totes on scoring platforms, capping those stacks with recycling containers, and properly disposing of pool noodles, representing litter. In keeping with the recycling theme of the game, all game pieces used are reusable or recyclable by teams in their home locations or by FIRST at the end of the season.

FIRST:
FIRST is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization devoted to helping young people discover and develop a passion for science, engineering, technology, and math. Founded in 1989 by inventor Dean Kamen, FIRST designs accessible, innovative programs that motivate young people to pursue education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math, while building self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills. The 2012-2013 FIRST season attracted more than 300,000 youth and more than 120,000 Mentors, Coaches, and Volunteers from 70+ countries. The annual programs culminate in an international robotics competition and celebration where teams win recognition, gain self confidence, develop people and life skills, make new friends, and perhaps discover an unforeseen career path.

FIRST Robotics Competition:
FRC combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of students are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a ?eld of competitors. It’s as close to "real-world engineering" as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team. Students get to learn from professional engineers, build and compete with a robot of their own design, learn and use sophisticated software and hardware, compete and cooperate in alliances and tournaments, earn a place in the World Championship, qualify for over $16 million in college scholarships.
