Darüşşafaka has changed the flow of my life

I dream more and keep my dreams bigger. I have always said since I came to Darüşşafaka, that I have wanted to be an artist. If I had not have a school that support me, achieving this dream would be impossible.

Studying at 8th grade in Darüşşafaka, Defne Hadiş was born in 2001 and participated in Darüşşafaka Entrance Exam in İstanbul in 2010. Leaving her 4th year behind at Darüşşafaka, Defne is especially interested in painting. She already has such an original style that it is possible to distinguish her painting from among hundreds. Darüşşafaka offers her any opportunity to develop this skill. Opening her first personal painting exhibition in May at Beyoğlu Eller Art Galery, she is now preparing to open the second one. Besides painting, she plays piano and basketball. Like many students she first heard about Darüşşafaka through an exam invitation sent to her name while she was studying at 3rd grade. Although her mother opposed to this invitation for its being a boarding school, she took the exam and passed it successfully.Saying

“I have been painting since I have known myself” Defne shares “What whipped up my enthusiasm to focus on this field was an incident that happened when I started primary school. Our teacher asked us to draw a smiling face on our drawing papers, but I did not draw it in the way she wanted. Then, she got angry with me and tore my paper apart. After that bad incident, I focused more on portraits.”

Noting that she encountered a very different environment in her first drawing lesson at Darüşşafaka, Defne says “In our first lesson, our teacher Selvihan gave us crayons and said that we were free to draw whatever we wanted. Later, she examined our papers and told me that she really liked my one. After that first day, she has always supported me. I admire Salvador Dali and Utku Varlık in this field as my paintings are also surrealist. We discussed my style with my teacher and she said “When one takes a look at a mix of paintings, he should be able to spot your one because it should be unique”. Sharing that she describes her emotions with colours on a paper, Defne says “There was not a specific theme in my first exhibition. I began with butterflies and human portraits. As for my new exhibition, I would like to quote from current issues around the world.”

Aspiring to receive a graphic design and perspective education at Mimar Sinan University, Defne shares her dream with us with these sentences: “I would like to be an artist, have a caravan to travel around the world and to help people.

Everyone tells me to be a doctor or engineer, but I will choose the job that I dream of myself. Making these dreams come true will be the biggest happiness for me. Darüşşafaka has changed the flow of my life. Now I dream more and keep my dreams bigger. I have always said since I came to Darüşşafaka, that I wanted to be an artist. If I had not have a school that support me, achieving this dream would be impossible. However, being a Darüşşafaka student means to achieve the impossible. My friends from my previous school say “We know that you will reach a good position in the future, don’t forget us when you become very successful.” Then, I tell them to improve themselves as well because this has nothing to do with where they study, though I believe otherwise. Since they have seen it, most of them has already given up trying because when you are faced with the truth, it is not just enough to dream.”

Being a Darüşşafaka student means to fulfill all aspirations

If I had not entered Darüşşafaka , I would not have improved myself this much in dancing. First of all, I would not have met such professional trainers,  would not have been supported to this extent and would not have had the same opportunities at hand.

Studying at 8th grade in Darüşşafaka, Deniz Şengün was born in 2001. He participated in Darüşşafaka Entrance Exam in 2010. Deniz who has spent 4 year at the institution is very fond of dancing. Bringing a large number of cups to Darüşşafaka in this field, Deniz now aims to obtain international achievements.

Besides dancing, Deniz also plays guitar and sings and aspires to shape his career in arts.

Deniz, having passed the Darüşşafaka Entrance Exam in the 8th place shares that “We were asked to choose a sports field when we started Darüşşafaka. There were posters about dancing activities, everywhere around the school thus it caught my attention. At the beginning, we were 80 students but remained just a few through the end of the education year. During this time, dancing became a disciplined life style for me rather than just an entertaining activity. First, we came in the first place in the Marmara Region Dance Competition organized by the Dance Federation. With this morale and excitement, we participated in other competitions organized in Ankara, İzmir, Antalya and Eskişehir and always came in the top three. We also competed in Georgia and Russia and came in the 3rd place in Georgia.”

Saying that he would not be able to improve himself this much in dancing if he had not entered Darüşşafaka, Deniz shares “first of all, I would not have had such professional trainers, would not have been supported to this extent and would not have had the same opportunities at hand. Thus, I feel as if I am paying my debt to Darüşşafaka when we bring the cups that we are awarded in competitions, to our school.”

“We display a joint effort for 5 years, with my trainer and my dance partner. I would never want to waste these efforts. Also, I believe that you should keep going with an aspiration if you really enjoy it. I think being a Darüşşafaka student means to fulfill all your aspirations.”

Saying that Darüşşafaka changed his life both from cultural, social and academical aspects, Deniz shares “There is an obvious gap between my friends from my previous school, in terms of cultural, social and academical aspects. For example, spare time means only going out for them. But in Darüşşafaka, spare time means to be able to play musical instruments, do sports, lose yourself in the world of books, visit exhibitions, go to theatre, cinema etc. Because we have all these opportunities here. Thus, there appears a gap between Darüşşafaka students and the others.

Dreaming of looking at all the cups that he has brought and will continue to bring to Turkey, in the future, Deniz wants to continue his education in Bosphorus University: “We have visited Bosphorus University for dance trainings. Just as I felt the first moment I stepped in Darüşşafaka, I said to myself that I should definitely study there.”
