Darüşşafaka has changed the flow of my life
I dream more and keep my dreams bigger. I have always said since I came to Darüşşafaka, that I have wanted to be an artist. If I had not have a school that support me, achieving this dream would be impossible.
Studying at 8th grade in Darüşşafaka, Defne Hadiş was born in 2001 and participated in Darüşşafaka Entrance Exam in İstanbul in 2010. Leaving her 4th year behind at Darüşşafaka, Defne is especially interested in painting. She already has such an original style that it is possible to distinguish her painting from among hundreds. Darüşşafaka offers her any opportunity to develop this skill. Opening her first personal painting exhibition in May at Beyoğlu Eller Art Galery, she is now preparing to open the second one. Besides painting, she plays piano and basketball. Like many students she first heard about Darüşşafaka through an exam invitation sent to her name while she was studying at 3rd grade. Although her mother opposed to this invitation for its being a boarding school, she took the exam and passed it successfully.Saying
“I have been painting since I have known myself” Defne shares “What whipped up my enthusiasm to focus on this field was an incident that happened when I started primary school. Our teacher asked us to draw a smiling face on our drawing papers, but I did not draw it in the way she wanted. Then, she got angry with me and tore my paper apart. After that bad incident, I focused more on portraits.”
Noting that she encountered a very different environment in her first drawing lesson at Darüşşafaka, Defne says “In our first lesson, our teacher Selvihan gave us crayons and said that we were free to draw whatever we wanted. Later, she examined our papers and told me that she really liked my one. After that first day, she has always supported me. I admire Salvador Dali and Utku Varlık in this field as my paintings are also surrealist. We discussed my style with my teacher and she said “When one takes a look at a mix of paintings, he should be able to spot your one because it should be unique”. Sharing that she describes her emotions with colours on a paper, Defne says “There was not a specific theme in my first exhibition. I began with butterflies and human portraits. As for my new exhibition, I would like to quote from current issues around the world.”
Aspiring to receive a graphic design and perspective education at Mimar Sinan University, Defne shares her dream with us with these sentences: “I would like to be an artist, have a caravan to travel around the world and to help people.
Everyone tells me to be a doctor or engineer, but I will choose the job that I dream of myself. Making these dreams come true will be the biggest happiness for me. Darüşşafaka has changed the flow of my life. Now I dream more and keep my dreams bigger. I have always said since I came to Darüşşafaka, that I wanted to be an artist. If I had not have a school that support me, achieving this dream would be impossible. However, being a Darüşşafaka student means to achieve the impossible. My friends from my previous school say “We know that you will reach a good position in the future, don’t forget us when you become very successful.” Then, I tell them to improve themselves as well because this has nothing to do with where they study, though I believe otherwise. Since they have seen it, most of them has already given up trying because when you are faced with the truth, it is not just enough to dream.”
